| Lake Winnott News We Won! One Less Sand Mine in the Pines. Mrs. Ginnie Christie, her brother Frank, and Nevil Parker attended the July 12, 2005 Putnam County Commission meeting and submitted comments against Florida Rock's mining proposal. The marathon meeting began Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. and finally went to vote on Wednesday at about 3:45 a.m. The Board of County Commissioners voted 4-1 to deny Florida Rock's application for a new sand mine in the Johnson area. Over the past two years, the West Putnam Lake Region Association (WPLRA) has worked long and hard to defeat the Florida Rock plan, and they deserve a big congratulations. Thank you WPLRA! Please visit the WPLRA Web site to learn more about its victory and to learn about other efforts to protect Florida's waters. ![]() Big Boom? Big Mess! Fallout from fireworks litters lake fronts The Lake Winnott fireworks were as bright and exciting again this year as ever. But the festivities brought more than sizzling light shows, as many residents woke the next day to discover. The fallout from plastics-based explosives cartridges confettied the shoreline with shards of broken plastic and spent tubing. One non-resident property owner on the Baker's Acres side of the lake was distressed by the amount of litter left on her beach. Several residents on the Lake Winnott Road side found that they had to strain the water at their shorelines several times throughout the summer using collanders and seives in order to clean up the mess. Please be aware that while litter is a nuisance in itself, the bits of floating plastic are sharp enough to cut up the guts of fish, birds, turtles, and any other creatures who mistake the litter for food. If you can, try to purchase paper and cardboard-based fireworks for July 4, 2006, or offer to help your neighbors clean up any of the fallout that lands on their property. It's up to all of us to keep our lake pollution free and to maintain healthy wildlife. ![]() | ![]() |
